The 5 Steps Before a Flower Hits Your Vase

Posted by Amelia Hollis on

Sometimes I think people forget how nature actually works.

If you’ve ever grown flowers or veggies at home, you’ll know the feeling — the satisfaction of watching something you’ve nurtured from seed to bloom (or harvest). First, you source the soil, seeds, and fertiliser. You prep garden beds or pots. Then you water, watch, and ward off pests. It’s a labour of love.

Now, imagine doing that on a massive scale — and your livelihood depends on it.

A few years ago, there was a trend where everyone thought growing flowers at home and selling them on the side would be a quick way to make money. But with unpredictable weather, rising costs of fertilisers, and sheer hard work involved, many realised it wasn’t so simple. To make a decent profit, you'd need to charge more than most people expect — or do it purely for the love of it.

So yes — it still surprises me when people walk into our studio and casually comment on how “expensive” flowers are.

Let me break it to you gently: We’re not like a grocery store, hardware shop or department store. The flowers don’t magically arrive prepped and perfect, ready to sell. While our hardworking growers absolutely do the heavy lifting, florists like us handle the entire next phase — from sourcing to design to delivery.

Here’s what really happens before a flower ends up in your vase:

1. Grown with Love by Our Local Growers

At Buds on B, 80–90% of our flowers are locally and Australian grown. This means the product is fresher, more sustainable, and of a higher quality — but also comes at a higher price. And rightly so — our growers are running businesses too. They deserve to be paid fairly for their time, skill, and the cost of production.

2. Sourcing the Blooms

Long before our studio opens each morning, I’m up with the sun, driving around the countryside to handpick the best flowers available. Whether you need a specific shade of blush or 24 white roses, we go the extra mile to source exactly what you need — from trusted local growers and wholesalers right here on the Sunshine Coast.

3. Conditioning Each Stem

Unlike supermarkets or fruit shops, our flowers don’t arrive ready to go. Each bunch is carefully unpacked, stripped of excess foliage and thorns, and trimmed to the right length. Every flower variety requires specific care — and we know exactly what each one needs to stay fresh and beautiful for as long as possible.

4. Designing with Intention

A professionally made bouquet is more than just a bunch of flowers. As qualified florists, we invest time and money into training, design principles, and product knowledge — so what you receive isn’t random. Each arrangement is created with balance, longevity, and beauty in mind. You’re not buying just flowers — you’re buying floral art.

5. Delivered with Care

At Buds on B, we don’t outsource deliveries. We never send flowers with careless couriers. Why? Because we understand the investment — both yours and ours. Every arrangement leaves the studio with water, care instructions, and is hand-delivered with love. We also take the time to offer floral advice tailored to your order — whether it’s a simple gift bouquet, a styled shoot, or flowers for your home or business.

So the next time you walk into a flower shop and admire that beautiful bouquet, take a moment to appreciate the journey it’s been on.

It didn’t just magically appear — and no, we’re not trying to “rip customers off.” We’re a real business with real costs, just like yours. We don’t just “play with flowers all day” — we craft, we design, we deliver beauty with care.

And believe me, every stem is worth it.
