I recently had the absolute pleasure of working with the talented team at @gulldesign to create a floral arrangement for their latest photoshoot — and let me tell you, it was a dream collaboration. Their space is warm, modern, and full of beautiful design details that made my florist heart sing.
But what actually goes into designing a floral arrangement for an interior space? It’s not just about picking pretty flowers. There’s a whole creative process behind the scenes — and I’d love to take you behind the curtain.

Step 1: The Vessel Shapes the Vision
When a client reaches out for styling florals — whether for a home, business, event, or photoshoot — the very first thing I consider is the vase. It might seem like a small detail, but the vessel sets the foundation for the entire design.
Whether it’s something they already have or one we provide, the shape, height, and texture of the vase guides how I build the arrangement. Just like a good frame complements a work of art, the right vessel elevates the florals.
Step 2: Inspiration with a Twist
Next, I look at the inspiration images clients send. But here's the thing: I don’t copy them. Instead, I use them as a reference point for texture, movement, and overall styling. I deliberately don’t focus too much on colour here — that comes in the next step.
What I do take from these images is the feeling they evoke: Is it loose and wild? Tight and sculptural? Playful or refined? These cues help me interpret the client's vision in my own floral language.
Step 3: Reading the Room (Literally)
Once I’ve seen the space — either in person or in photos — I start looking for accent colours I can pull into the florals.
Why? Because flowers shouldn’t feel like an afterthought. They should feel like they belong. Whether it’s a pop of brass in the lighting, a soft blush in a cushion, or the rich tones in timber cabinetry, I use those subtle cues to tie the arrangement to the room’s existing design.
This is where floristry becomes less about flowers and more about atmosphere. We’re designing a feeling, not just a look.
The Design for Gull Design: Warm, Cosy, and Effortless
With Gull Design’s space, I was instantly drawn to the warm woods throughout — the floorboards, the cabinetry, the detail in the wall lamps, and even the tone of the counter. The whole space whispered, “cosy, calm, and curated.”
And as I walked in, I noticed the fireplace glowing softly in the background. It was the perfect moment of warmth that inspired the final design.
Here’s what I chose and why:
- 🍁 Maple – to bring that golden, autumnal feel and echo the warmth of the space
- 🍁 Spider Disbuds – a pop of designer energy and a perfect colour match to the lighting accents
- 🍁 Rosehip Berry – to add softness and whimsy, while breaking up the blockiness of the arrangement
The result? A design that felt meant for the space — elegant yet effortless, inviting yet refined.
You're Not Just Buying Flowers
This is something I always remind clients:
When you purchase styling florals, you’re not just buying flowers. You’re hiring a designer to create an atmosphere.
Everything I choose — from the stem lengths to the textures, to the colour balance — is intentional. It’s about telling a story that fits your space, your brand, or your event.
